Monthly Meetings

History Redcliffe members meet each month for a feature presentation from a guest speaker, followed by refreshments and an opportunity to chat with other members, guests and visitors.

Monthly meetings are usually held on the first Friday of each month at 2pm. However, due to the changeable nature of COVID safety restrictions, venues and dates may be subject to change so check the Events page to be sure.

Visitors are most welcome.

Sands of Time Conference

History Redcliffe proudly hosted the 4th Queensland State Local and Family History Conference with History Queensland. This year’s conference was called Sands of Time. It was held at the Dolphins Leagues Club from 21st to 23rd October 2022 and was a resounding success!

$Opened in 1925, Anzac Memorial Avenue (as it was originally named) is the longest World War I memorial avenue in Queensland, spanning a distance of some nearly 18kms. Notably, it was the first bitumen motor road connecting Brisbane to Redcliffe. It not only serves a lasting and impressive memorial to the ANZACs but also provided valuable employment to the returned servicemen during the period of its construction. Every time we offer a tour through Redcliffe Cemetery we get one of two responses:

• I attended it and it was a fantastic event. When is the next one? I can’t wait to go again!

• I missed getting a ticket and I’m sorry I didn’t go.

It is with great regret that we share the sad news of the passing of our dear friend, James Houghton. It was James who, in 1967, placed an advertisement in the Redcliffe Herald asking for a public meeting for anyone interested in starting a group dedicated to the history of Redcliffe. That became the Redcliffe Historical Society, now known as History Redcliffe.

Over the years, his commitment to the Redcliffe community has been unwavering. His dedication to History Redcliffe and his friendship will be greatly missed. Vale James.
